Using Multiple Serial Communications Cards

In theory you can use as many serial communications cards in your system as you have hardware support for. We have setup one configuration (using PSeries adapters in a PCI backplane) including 14 SL232 RS232 pc cards.

However we are reliant on the operating system being set up to correctly allocate the required resources to these cards. The system mentioned was running LINUX. Other operating systems do not support multiple communications cards.

Windows 2000/XP

These operating systems correctly support multiple comms ports, so you should be able to use 2 cards in the same system.

LINUX

This operating systems correctly support multiple comms ports, so you should be able to use 2 cards in the same system.

Windows CE

Windows CE does not properly support multiple cards, so you can only use one serial communications card in a Windows CE system. This also applies to any CE based operating systems (including Windows CE.NET, Pocket PC and Windows Mobile.

You can operate two COM ports by using one of Elan's dual port cards (see this FAQ for more information) but you will get an error message if you try to install more than one card.
