Connection cannot be made using U111

Description of Problem

The installation of the U111 proceeds as expected and there are no obvious errors, but the connection fails.

Solution

Some customers experienced problems due to a bug in an early version of the driver. This FAQ describes how to replace the problem driver file.

Check Your Settings!

It is notoriously easy to make mistakes in setting up a connection via a wireles modem in Windows. If you have downloaded and are using the above file and you still get error messages when trying to connect, the most likely explaination is that you have mis-typed a configuration setting. Things to check include :

  1. Do you have the correct telephone number for the provider you are trying to connect to?
  2. If required, do you have the correct cdgcont values for your provider, and have you entered the correct syntax? (E.G AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"; )
  3. Are you using the correct Username/password
  4. Are your dial settings correct? If your PC is using an area code or country code this will cause it to dial the wrong number and your connection cannot be made.

Detailed Description of the Problem

The correct entries for the U111 show in Device Manager. (The following screenshots are from Windows XP.)

However it is not possible to make a connection via the Merlin card.

If you setup a manual connection, then go to this connection and click 'Connect', the error message "777 the connection temp failed because the modem (or connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order" is displayed.

Querying the modem (go to 'Modem Properties' and click 'Query Modem')

gives the following error message :

Several other error codes have been reported, including 'error 692'.
