Using the U111 in Windows Vista

The U111 can be sucessfully installed in Windows Vista, but problems can occur installing the datacard.

To install the U111, either download the latest drivers and unzip them to a folder on your PC, or insert your Cd-ROM. Plug in the hardware and when the hardware wizard comes up choose 'search automatically'. The wizard should find the drivers, but if not you may need to 'browse' to the location of the drivers.

Problems with Datacards

Many of the 3G cards are multifunction cards, that is they have more than one logical device inside them. The installation of multifunction cards is not well supported in Vista, and it is necessary to modify the INF files supplied with the card for Vista operation. Some of the card manufacturers have not yet done this. If you install your U111, and then insert your datacard, you may find that the installation fails with a message like "Windows could not find the correct drivers for your hardware", and the card appears in device manager with a yellow ! next to it.

Solution

If the manufacturer of your datacard has not released a modified driver for Windows Vista yet, you may be able to get it working using an INF file modified by Elan. Download the appropriate file, and unzip it somewhere onto your C drive. Then plug in the card. If you have already tried to install the card you might need to go to Device Manager, find the device (look for the yellow !), right click on it and choose 'update driver'.

Windows hardware wizard should detect the inf file and install your 3G card.
